Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Religion has always played a significant role in shaping the political landscape of many countries, and Nigeria is no exception. In Katsina Local Government Area (LGA), Katsina State, religion, particularly Islam, holds a prominent place in the lives of the majority of the population. The influence of religious leaders, institutions, and beliefs on political decisions and electoral outcomes is well-documented in Nigerian politics. This study examines the role of religion in shaping electoral choices in Katsina LGA, focusing on how religious affiliations and the positions of religious leaders influence the voting behavior of citizens in local elections.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While religion has been identified as an important factor in influencing electoral outcomes in Nigeria, there is limited research on its specific role in Katsina LGA. This study seeks to fill this gap by exploring how religion affects voter choices in the region, especially in terms of party affiliation, candidate selection, and voting behavior. It also aims to assess whether religious endorsements or messages influence the electorate's decision-making process.
